Most of our dog owners who live near rattlesnakes do use the vaccine. The vaccine is not 100% effective against the venom, but it can increase the likelihood of survival should there be a bite. Even if vaccinated, a bite is an emergency and requires immediate transfer to a veterinarian. Antivenin is very expensive, so the vaccine may end up saving a life and a lot of money! Jake is a big dog, but any bite could be serious. Smaller snakes are actually more dangerous if small means young! The vaccine is initially given as 2 doses, 30 days apart and then a booster annually. If you want to pursue the vaccines, give us a call. Jake is up to date on his exam, so we can set you up with a member of the veterinary nursing team for the vaccines!
