No. I didn't make a donation before my tour began. However, after the tour i was so impressed i decided i wanted to donate to help keep the place open.
It is definitely worth your donation as it is amazing and that helps keep them open
Whatever is in your heart, if you can't give no one's going to say anything but as you read all the posts they do rely on the help of the public.
It is not a requirement but it is highly suggested as they rely on donations to maintain the house.
