Always try to contact a licensed wildlife rabies vector.. Usually Wildlife rehabs and local vets have their names. Calling the Town will guarantee the raccoons death. By law they are suppose to kill them regardless of health.. Contrary to belief Raccoons come out looking for food during the day while their babies sleep..They watch over them at night. If the racoon is acting very strange walking in circles with discharge coming from their eyes nose and or mouth, or acting violent..they could have distemper, which is deadly to them..then call the Town..I saved 2 raccoons that fell out of my tree..One couldn't walk, the other couldn't see. Sometimes they get hurt fighting protecting their young from predators, or fighting for food...If I called the Town they would have killed them. When they are killed there is no one to feed and protect their babies. Thank goodness the ones that I saved showed no signs of pregnancy.
The shelter is closed unfortunately. It is likely to have distemper, we haven't had a case if rabies in many years. You can call the police but be sure it isn't going anywhere. We open at 8am if still there.
