When the weather is cold the animals seek warmth and are usually huddled in a warm crevice. When it's hot the animals are more lethargic but come forward more during morning hours. The best time to see the animals is during their scheduled feedings so it's good idea to get the schedule for the day and plan accordingly.
The zoo is awesome year round. There are great indoor and outdoor exhibits.
Getting there when the zoo first opens always works best for us. Mild weather is certainly helpful for seeing the animals but hippos are not out unless it is over 50 degrees bur they do have behind the scenes encounter with animals too for a extra fee that are also good too!
They are always out. They have freedom to roam around the zoo.
