We live in Quebec but would like to do some hiking in your area. We would also like to camp close by so that we don't have to hike with all our gear. Suggestions for some wilderness camping , perhaps on a platform (October)?

I second ADK Loj. I suggest calling ahead and making reservations. Nearby Meadows offers free Wilderness camping, but no platforms.

The ADK Loj at Heart Lake has camp sites, permanent tents on platforms, 3 cabins, and, of course, the Loj itself. All about 10 minute drive from Lake Placid.

Same here. Stayed at the hotel at Plattsburgh. It is convenient.
