Apply to your local Habitat affiliate. They take applications in January, usually. Then there are assessments of ability to be a good candidate. If accepted, there are classes and "sweat equity" of about 300 hours of work on houses or in Habitat programs. When you have saved money for the down payment, completed your hours, then when your own house is finished being built, you can get a low- or no-interest mortgage for your own home.(depends on local Habitat which way they structure the porgram.)
