They have regular orientation days for new volunteers. You can find info on their website or their Facebook page.
I would definately go talk to them. They cannot for liability reasons just let volunteers come. They have to sign legal release and be worked in among staff hours.
It helps to fill out the application bit that they have on the website before you go. Once you do that someone usually calls and sets up a time with you to come. Also look at what dogs are available on their website because they'll ask which ones you want to see. When you get there, if they don't forget that they talked to you, some one should be taking you around to see the dogs/puppies you had in mind. Their phone lines were down from Irma though and not sure if they have had them fixed yet. As of a few weeks ago they were still down. If you can't get in touch with them then you can go there and talk to someone in adoptions and they should be able to help you from there.
