NYC has very strict laws concerning firearms. Only those with NYC pistol permits are allowed to handle handguns. You can rent a .22 cal rifle for target practice after taking a short safety course. Call for details if your interested. New Jersey is another strict state. So is Connecticut. If you would like to rent and fire a handgun or assault rifle, the nearest state that allows it would be Pennsylvania. A little over an hours drive from NYC. Suggest you check out a gun range there if you can. It is well worth the trip.
On this side you couldn't shoot a pistol. In upstate New York Nadia who doesn't have a license can shoot a pistol. On this side without a license you can shoot a .22 caliber rifle and I think it's going to cost you $ 100 to $ 150. If you want to shoot a gun, you need to go to New Jersey.
