You're going to have to get the VIN done first. Those are done at any municipal police station. Contact one near you to learn what days/times they do those. To register a vehicle, you will need the title, if the vehicle is model year 2001 or newer. If the vehicle is older than that, you will need proof of ownership, such as a bill of sale. Here's the registration form: http://www.dmv.ri.gov/documents/forms/registration/TR-1.pdf Registrations fees are based on vehicle weight. The fee table is here: http://www.dmv.ri.gov/documents/fees/RegByWeightChart.pdf You can find more information here: http://www.dmv.ri.gov/registrations/transfer/index.php

to the Cranston DMV and explain the situation they should be able to sell you a 5-day temporary plate The other idea would be to have the car towed from the tow yard directly to the VIN inspection station leave the car at the VIN inspection station while you go register the car There is a company that will go to the registry for you once you have the VIN check www.ezregri.com

As long as you have the title you can have the VIN check done
