We will be visiting in the middle of April. Is it crowed around that time of year? If so, is it easier to get in later in the afternoon?

The earlier you get there the better. They closing gates at 9 or when they reached capacity

No, get there early, because once they are at capacity for the day they do not allow others in. It is popular around that time of year but as long as you arrive around 9am you shouldn't have a problem.
