People are in line way earlier than the 8am opening hours. This time of the year, it will be hard to get a spot.

This time of year, you should rely on reservations. With Los Angeles so close, the chance of getting a camp spot on a friday is pretty low. If you do try to come early, be sure to have a contingency in place.
During a holiday it is impossible to get a space on Friday, but on a regular weekend best to get there before 11:00 AM
Leave on Wednesday or Thursday this time of year.
