Hello! If you don't have something special to do around the center, I recommend you go to the HI HOSTEL near the coast and the bridge, fort Mason I think it is. Call and ask. I had to do paperwork downtown and I had to stay at the Downtown hostel, but being there I heard the receptionist recommend the Ft Mason hostel

There are sooooo homless in the area, a lot! But the reality is that it is not dangerous, each one is in their world, at most they approach you to ask for money or food, but nothing more than that. Beyond that you are close to the center. Conclusion: I do not consider it dangerous!
