Like Therese Wiley said, there are health issues with food handlers drinking in prep areas or when handling food. With that being said, having worked for Shaw's for almost 25 years, I have never seen anyone denied a water break. On hot days they even provide bottled water to the carriage shaggers to stay hydrated while they work. They/we care for our employees, and there wellbeing greatly.
It's a sanitation issue, usually controlled by board of health, they are allowed water on their breaks.
I'd think the sanitary issues that come with handling just about everything in a grocery store environment, combined with the people/germ traffic everyday, must be an enormous task.. Carver Shaws, imo, are one of the better locations, in this regard, in the area..
