A sanctuary means that they've been taken out of potentially dangerous situations and moved into a safer environment.
Most of the animals have medical/genetic conditions or issues and have to be in smaller spaces for their safety. And many are also older animals living out their retirement years.
I volunteered for a day there, the cages are supposed be a decent bit bigger than what is required by law so that's a plus. And mamy of the animals would have been put down because of genetic disorders, or were too closely related to the breeding population zoos use which makes the risk of their offspring having genetic disorders so they would have been put down. So you have to ask yourself, is a cage that isn't the biggest in the world better than being put down because a zoo didn't expect to a good return on investment? I think most of the animals, like people, would choose life even if it wasn't under the best circumstances.
That is a good question. It may depend on the size of the property that they own.? But that is a question you can ask them there.
