They do call ahead seating, not 'reservations', for multiple reasons. First, it cuts your wait time. If you walk in at 6pm on a Friday night, you're going to wait 1+hrs. Calling ahead enables you to walk in a few minutes before your quote time and get sat faster. Secondly, servers have a 3-4 table(s) section. If you have a larger group (6+) and they seat you incomplete, it takes up too much table time in a high volume restaurant. Servers are trained to flip their tables. They're not fine dining so they expect tables to only dine for up to an hour. If a member of a party is late and holds up the dining process, and it happens multiple times a night, the table that server planned on flipping, might miss a rotation or two. That adds up to a lot of money for servers who depend on solely tips when making $3-7 an hour. Also, it helps the restaurant anticipate how busy they're going to be. They will cut their staff unless they know a wave of customers are coming in.
I agree!
If servers want a good tip, they need to provide exceptional service. I’ve always had excellent service at Texas Roadhouse. Making people wait for the entire party to arrive is NOT exceptional. They could seat who’s there, get drinks and appetizers started.
Go elsewhere like Taco Bell.
when a reservation is made means all parties should be on time, and due to business having to keep serving others and need of table space. also tipping less isnt gone to make your family come on time if this is the problem to start with, the serve works with what party is given to them not the being on time issues.
