They try, but a lot of pets are from other shelters and some are not sure of the age of the pet. But they get close. A good vet can tell you about the age of a pet.
If they know the birthday, they will tell you. It's easier to know when it's a very young puppy or sometimes an owner surrender
Your pets birthday or approximate b-day can be found in your adoption papers.
