There are a couple of things which you should book in advance. For example, the astronaut training experience.
I don't think you need to buy in advance. We did not pay for any extra add ons. It was me, my wife, and our 8 and 9 year olds. We got there a little after 9 AM and it was close to 9:45 by the time we sat through lines for tickets then admission through security. We didn't leave until just before 6. But they're is a mad rush in the gift shop with crazy lines at the end of the day. Consider doing early souvenir shipping if that is in your plans.
It's always busy... We booked 3 months in advance... For military people, the best place to stay is the Air Force Base
We arrived at 11 am and did the bus tour, the Atlantis Center and another presentation and it took us quite a while. We had to leave because of a lightning storm. Every presentation is worth it. But go early so the weather don't limit your visit.
No need to book. Its not like Disney world... and it will be winter time.m
