I got tickets the morning we went, online. However, I got a notification of a specific hour we can enter (12pm). We have a pass and that time worked well for us, but if your want to make sure you start your day early, buy at least 24 hours ahead - when I checked the night before it already gave me only the option of entering at 12pm.
When we visited we bought several days in advance, luckily we did because when we arrived at the park (an hour before opening) they were already sold out.
A week in advance is usually good, unless a launch is scheduled. Then all bets are off.

You can buy them at the park or online as they most of the time have availability. I do recommend calling them to make sure you are not planning to go during a special event date where the park may be sold out before you getting there.

Either way is ok but to take the bus tour need to get those as soon as you get in cause they run out fast

As one of the responder said it is simple to buy there. Even though I bought 1 week in advance I saw people having no trouble buying tickets. However it is important to come on time if you want to reserve certain exhibits such as Apollo tour
I thought about buying in advance but decided to wait until I arrived just in case we didn't make it on the day we planned. I found that buying in person was not a problem at all, they have kiosks and even on Spring Break we didn't have to wait. The line however was to get in and through security, so having purchased them in advance would not have made a difference for us.
