It is wonderful to be inquisitive and want to learn more. However, sometimes our knowledge or our brain gets in the way of the essence of meditation - observing things as it is and makes simple things unecessarily complicated. That was what happened to me. In the 10- day course, it teaches you step-by-step how to meditate in this tradition. It also has discourse every night to satisfy the needs of our brains to understand. Just prepare yourself to have an open mind and commit to finish the 10-day course. You will do fine and get benefit from it. It is great that you start the journey on Vipassana meditation. There are two movies on you tube that you can watch: Doing time, doing vipassana; Dhamma Brothers and also a ted talk: Vipassana meditation and body sensation: Eliona Ariel. They can help you to have an overview. A quiet mind by John Colem is a book that I read and liked very much. It's a research that he did in different types of meditation.

J, signing up for a 10 day retreat is the first major step in learning this extremely beneficial and universal technique. I agree with Zoe's comment that you will learn everything step by step. Just be patient and determined to commit to complete the 10 days course. A good book is The Art of Living by S.N Goenka, the teacher who helped spread this technique world-wide in it's purest form. Best wishes for a rewarding retreat.
