Both a QDRO and a DRO are court orders that set forth orders that a former spouse is entitled to receive a certain portion of the other spouse's retirement plan. A QDRO is "qualified" by the plan administrator to determine whether the QDRO complies with the plan's rules for segregation of benefits. A DRO does not require qualification of the plan administrator.

QDRO is short for “Qualified Domestic Relations Order” and a DRO is short for “Domestic Relations Order”. A QDRO and DRO are basically the same thing, the only difference is that a QDRO will be 'qualified' by the administrator of the retirement plan
