You only have to pay for parking ($5) and then you can walk around the ates and visit the river. For FREE!!
It is worth the 5$ parking, it helps support the wildlife there, they give tours of the nature center and it is a beautiful place to visit
Park at the end of Palm Dr. (North of the park). You can walk in through an access road there. Parking during the day is free and in a safe neighborhood there.
You can also park outside; then it's free. But I've seen a car which has its window smashed and broken into.
