You wait in line and as you pass the food that is already prepared they wive you a plate. If it requires special preparation you order it at the cashier. Once paid you get a number and they bring the remaining food to your table.yeah! No tipping policy. I do it anyway
Cafeteria-stye is not technically correct. Perhaps deli-style more closely describes our system. Basically, you line up at the register to order prior to taking a seat. Then, once you find a table (three dining rooms), please put your receipt on the table and we will run the food out to you. The timing depends on what you order (fried and grilled items are prepared to order and take the longest).
The food is prepared in the kitchen around the corner from where they have a cafeteria style prep/serve area. So after you order your food at register and go find a seat and leave your receipt on table for the server to find you, you watch them plate up the amazing food! The big bins of food coming out of kitchen sure doesn't last long, especially with the serving size! Absolutely loved the ham dinner with three sides (turnips, potato salad, and green beans with stewed tomatoes and onions - creole style) and bowl of white bean soup. One of the best meals we shared while in NOLA for a week. :) 💜
Also, Mother's has a "No Tips" policy, though it's hard to resist after seeing servers working so hard. It ties into cafeteria style, however.
You order at the register, grab a seat and they bring you your meal
You don't walk down a line, they bring it to you, however, you can see all of the prepared food through the window. You order, sit down, and get served at Mother's.
