This is because there are major retailers who charge more for an item but advertise that they will "beat any competitors price" so long as the other store is a brick and mortar store in the same city. It enables them to keep their prices high yet give the illusion they are cheaper by "beating" the local stores. This is a game they play, that fools the consumer and undercuts the mom and pop shops. They major retailer does not drop their price, they only match our price only for the customers that claim we are cheaper. They also know it is time consuming for our staff to respond to all these calls. Its become a game that the big retailers do to create an illusion that they are cheaper than the mom & pop stores, but they are not. The other response to your question is correct. All of the local small stores have banded together in unanimously refusing to play the phone price check game. Sorry for the inconvenience this caused but we have to do what we can to stay in biz among the sharks.

Most likely so people can't price shop. Many places do that... unfortunately.
