My son is ready for VPK. I tried to register him for “free” VPK. But their VPK goes until 1:30 and they want $500 for the extended time. But I only want the free VPK. How is it they can charge for a program that is free just because they choose this?

Many preschools in FL promote "Free VPK" in their marketing and advertising. It is important for parents to educate themselves on the states VPK voucher system so they understand what free VPK really means. Preschools themselves are not offering free VPK tuition. In reality you the parent need to get a VPK voucher from your local Early Learning Coalition. That voucher means the State of Florida is going to pay for 540 hours of VPK education for your child over the course of the year. Every preschool structures there VPK programs differently. Some offer 3 hours a day for 180 days or the length of the elementary school year. Some schools run a summer program where are the children go for free 6 hours a day for 90 days. So, with that background in mind. In your situation the issue is that your VPK voucher is only covering your child's tuition until 1: 30 p.m. You must pay tuition for any extra hours. Who else is paying his teacher to be there?

Free VPK only includes 3-4 hours daily. You are responsible for the remaining time your child stays at the school.
