I was there yesterday with the park mostly empty and they said you must reserve 24 hours in advance on reservecalifornia. No walk up camping at this park.
There are reservation only sites and first-come, first-serve sites. The campground fills up on the weekends during peak season, so i would recommend making a reservation.
