Hi, I'm from Alaska and I was visiting Safeway in Santa Cruz. I noticed you did not have baggers; the check-out clerks bagged too. Why is this? In Alaska we have check-out clerks AND baggers. Thanks.

It's understaffed and it's because the baggers are required to do everything in the store: bagging, cleaning, go backs. No Safeway has just baggers. They have courtesy clerks and sadly some times there will only be one for the whole day, thus leading to the check out clerk having to bag or no one will be able to assist bagging.

That may be because at the time they're short staffed. Who knows if it's their management or their pay rate, but they seem to always be short on employees at both Safeway locations in Santa Cruz. It is a good question though. It would decrease the lines a lot. Hopefully their Corporate Office reads these type of questions and starts offering more money to their employees. That would keep and attract harder working people.
