how difficult is the walk, and for older folks, how far in do you have to go to see a few of the tall trees?

3.05 miles/1:45 to do one side of the lower loop and the complete upper loop, the left side of the lower loop is washed out. The upper loop has the old growth forest, definitely recommend that, it's a little over a mile to the upper loop. The lower loop has more elevation, so if you make it to the upper loop the rest should be no problem. My wife and I are in our early 60's and walked it with our 90 lb dog. Took our time and enjoyed it.

Not a long walk. See amazingly huge trees almost immediately.

Upper loop is currently closed due to trail conditions. Makes the hike a little longer to access the old growth via lower loop, but still not very strenuous. May want to block off a couple hours.

Its uphill to the top and then down hill 50/50, the forest is not a beautiful as it once was because of some hemlock killing pests. My parents have easily pained knees and I would not take them. I was just there last week. If you have been to California you will be extremely disappointed.
