Electric but they have a serious kick when they want them to. It really depends on how well everyone's driving in your race. If there are few people slamming into each other or walls constantly the attended over your course might lower the top speed of the karts, which really sucks but is understandable. As long as everyone's driving fairly well then they'll keep everyone at Max speed which is a pretty fast.
