If you bring all the right documents, it's actually fairly fast. We went around lunchtime (bad idea), which took longer because some of the staff was out on lunch. I can't imagine it would take longer than an hour.
You have to have your old lisence, birth certificate, marriage licenses, and death certificate of spouce, or divorce decree. Be prepared to wait at least an hour!
