I landed at LAX and have a 5 hour layover. Why are you located outside the terminal so I will have to leave and then return through security?

The USO is not only outside security, it is not in any terminal. It is now housed in the Theme building (the one that looks like a spaceship). It is located between the old USO building and terminal 6 with the entrance facing terminal 6. Just for clarity... LAX terminals are organized in a U shape. Terminal 1 and 7 are across from each other and form the tips of the U shape. Bradley International terminal forms the base of the U shape. All terminals are only a few minutes walk away from the USO. But keep in mind that you cannot get to the USO without leaving the secured areas. As to WHY? The USO does not pay rent. Every airport donates space or not. Your question needs to be directed to the proper LAX authorities as to why they do not place it behind security. HINT: It's current location is nearly central to the entire complex.

Yes it's outside of the terminal, in the space ship looking building across the street. I walked through baggage claim in terminal 2 and then walked across the street.
