Bit of advice... We went for Thanksgiving and the county sheriff's Dept has a new policy on alcohol. $184 fine for open container. Put it in a cup. The officer came into our camp and found the drunkest person who had an open container and gave her a ticket. He said and I quote, " We Don't sniff cups." Also, camping is permitted only in the campgrounds. http://www.pinellascounty.org/park/05_ft_desoto.htm

You can pitch a tent on the beach anywhere you want. No need to contact anyone. I do all the time

Yes, for the afternoon, while the park is open. U can not spend the night on the beach. The beach can get really crowded, and it might be seen as rude, if the tent is too large. There is a beautiful picnic area, with a fishing pier and clean bathrooms with showers. U can pitch a tent in this area too; then just walk a few yards to the dog beach. FYI Ft Desoto has a goreous campgrounds. Campers get free admission into the park. Book early, as there is always a bit of a wait. Also, this needs to be said, watch ur stuff. People are known to jack anything and everything.
