You don't need to, but buying ahead guarantees you a seat at the time you choose. The boat fills up pretty quickly and you may not have as good a chance to get the time you want if you wait till you get to the docks.
No appointments needed, getting to it early is a good idea.
You can buy your tickets at the dock but it's best to buy online.
