Historically, locals called the area Skeeter Drain. Sarasota County acquired the land in 2001-2002 and held a naming contest, accepting public nominations for an official name. From the list of names submitted, the Board of County Commissioners chose Red Bug Slough Preserve as the official name of the site prior to the grand opening in 2007. Red Bug Slough is the name of the water feature that runs through the preserve.
Actually not sure. This was the name the county came up as far as I know other than that we adults as kids called sketter drain because of in the past was a marsh area
That is a good question, I'll have to Google it :)
