Wa Alaikum Salaam. Try to stay in a 4 or 5 star hotel. I favor the Embassy Suites, but I don't know if there's one near Spring Valley.
San Diego in general has a homeless and drug problem. If you stay in a higher-end hotel, you tend to avoid those problems.
