Hi Olivia, The Kaplan House provides inpatient hospital-level hospice care and patients are admitted after an assessment of patient needs by nursing staff in collaboration with family and physicians. Inpatient care is typically needed for complex pain and symptom management that cannot be administered at home. Lengths of stay vary depending on patient needs. Some patients stay for a few days to have their symptoms managed, and then are able to go back home. While others may stay for weeks if needed and medically eligible. When beds are available, Kaplan House is also available for respite stays for home hospice patients whose caregivers need a break. If you have more questions about eligibility and hospice care, please call our Referral Center at 888-287-1255. I am not a clinical staff, but complex pain is typically that which cannot be managed well at home --requiring adjustments in dosages, etc. Please call 888-287-1255 for more info.
