It's mostly common sense stuff man. I got out of the Corps in 2015 and took the FSC at the gun store counter, early this year, without having taken any classes. I didn't miss any questions.
They don't "require" any of the classes. If you want to jump into the higher level classes, great. I do recommend the basic class though because they go over a lot of the California laws, etc.
