mainly for reducing costs hiring check out people. but I think they work very well
The self checkouts are so they can cut back staff on working the front of house and have more staff working in assisting customers on the floor. Or so I have been told.
$$$$ that's what it's all about.
All about profitability. 1 employee for 6 self checkout stands, cheaper even with possible theft. Than 6 employees for 6 check out stands that are not always busy plus theft.
