When boarding the plane you can check it onto the pressurized cabin so it is safe from any harm during the flight. Parents do this with strollers so that they are readily available immediately after landing.

Check on the price of sending it ahead. The prices for the airlines are expensive plus I would worry about it being ok when you got to your destination. Hope this helps some.
