I have volunteered at the shelter for a couple of years & have not encountered this. That having been said, St Francis cares for dozens of cats & a cat may have just sprayed urine or the litter wasn't good @ odor control. The place is cleaned every morning & volunteers work throughout the day, cleaning litter boxes, making sure the cats have clean water etc. Management makes sanitary conditions a priority.
Me too! They're under new management as of 2019. The ONLY time I've seen that happen before was once in 2018. It was only because they had received a bunch of donated litter. Unfortunately the litter was very cheap and did nothing for odor control. As soon as the odor was present back then, they threw out all that litter, scrubbed the boxes, and went back to their normal brands. The problem was immediately taken care of. Perhaps new management received that same litter? Everything is scrubbed daily (unless that changed), so that's the only thing I can think of. But I've not been there this year so can't answer for sure. Based on the past though, it should be an isolated incident. Hopefully it gets addressed just as quickly as it was handled before!
