I didn't feel unsafe- that being said, pay attention to your surroundings. A lot of homeless sadly are around,but crime rate is low.

If you need to leave the hotel I would suggest walking straight to Union Square / Market Street and continue from that spot. All other perpendicular streets are a bit sketchy.

it is closer to union square and not as bad as you might think. just stay alert and off the phone and you should be ok. figure out your route in advance so you look less like a tourist.

From my experience you can walk thru the tenderloin and come out unscathed, I grew up in a rough area in Sacramento honestly they are all the same you keep to your self and don't intentionally cause drama you will be fine.
