What should I do if the animal shelter is closed and I found a stray dog and I don't know what to do with it

There are several things you can do to help stray dogs. Take it to a vet and get it scanned for a microchip. There is no charge for this. If there is contact info, you might be able to reunite the dog with their family. If you can hold the dog till the owner steps up, you will need to file a found report with the county or city shelter of the area where the dog was found. They can let you know how long the stray hold is. It can be anywhere from 4 days to a month depending upon the policy of each county. Place found pet ad for free in the newspaper, post on social media sites like Craigslist, Nextdoor, Pawboost, LostMyDoggie, Facebook sites for lost and found pets in the area found, and provide a poster with pic to the local vets and rescue groups.
