Look up a "Firearm Safety Certificate". If you've grown up around guns, it's common sense. Otherwise you'll need to study a bit for it. It's not difficult either way.
You must take a firearms safety test and pass it, and pay the fee. There is a study guide and a practice available online and at the bottom of turners.com , look for fsc test. You can take the test at any Turners outdoorsman location. The test is very similar to a driving permit test in that it covers basic understanding and is generalized, if you don't pass on your first attempt I believe you are allowed to go home and study and re-take the test before you are forced to pay for an additional test. I believe the test and laminated card cost $35.00. Good luck, and I hope you have a good day.
Pass 30 question test.
