I just found out that a certain drivers license is needed by 2020. I am 73 and have no prior moving violations. My license expires on my birthday which is 7-19-2020. Should I just wait until my license renewal 7-19-2020 or must I go in to DMV now?

You should get your renewal soon! If you do not receive it, go into DMV!

Karen, if you are referring to a "Golden Bear" for the real id and travel get it at expiration or before the deadline, whichever comes first. If you have a passport for travel id or will not be traveling, just wait for renewal.

You can go into the DMV now so you will have this out out of the way. I find it is easier, and less stressful to get things done earlier verses waiting.
