It's always better to have the receipt, but it's possible to still get a return without it. If you have the debit card you used and a good idea of when you bought the item, they can check transactions for that. They can return it to your card by having you swipe, and it can take about a week for the return to show up. If it's an older transaction, don't be surprised if they can't find it and offer you a shop card.
if you have your name and remember the item they can look it up on the computer, and they can even put it back on your credit card
I'm pretty sure I've had them put it back on on the credit card too, so I think that's an option
