I can't recommend the audio tour enough, it really enhances the experience and the production quality is awesome, make sure to bring your camera and warm clothes since there's always a cold breeze.
They offer multiple on-island experiences such as a self-guided audio tour. I would recommend doing the "200 years of history" tour beforehand. This is just a short walking tour up to the cellhouse where the audio tour starts.
Yes. As others said, take the audio tour. My advice for the whole day is to get there early, before noon. Wear layers so you can take it off as you get warmer, and make sure you have something that blocks the wind as the wind gusts can be up to 40mph at any time. Take a good camera as you'll have beautiful views of the Bay, the bridges, and San Francisco. You'll have a good time if you have plenty of time to go through it. Also, at 1pm in the dining hall, a Ranger gives an excellent briefing on the escape of '62 that you really shouldn't miss. It's a great way to spend a half-day. Enjoy it!
You can enjoy
Audio tour is awesome. Just probably have to pause the audio a lot. There is a lot of people there. And in my experience. They just stand in front of the area while the audio is playing. So u kinda of have to wait. But great experience. Wear good shoes. We did the night tour. Awesome.
Definitely take the audio tour. If you haven't purchased tickets yet, I'd recommend going early in the day. You're allowed to stay on the island and choose whichever return ferry desired, so by going early you can enjoy the island and the views after the audio tour, without feeling rushed. Then, return to the pier and enjoy lunch or dinner.
