In the 1850s the United States army built a fortress there, but it was never needed and in 1868 it became a military prison. In 1909 most of the original fortress was demolished and a new prison was constructed and put into operation in 1934.
I don't know that. It was built along time ago. It started out as a military base, then a penitentiary, and last a Indian reservation.
