Hello. It is listed as a National park. Used from a defensive bastion to a prison. It is currently one of the must-sees in San Francisco and is spectacular, both by day and at night.
It's a National Park. There is more to the Island then, once was a prison. There is tremendous history on the Island. Like who lived there before it became a prison, while it was a prison and after it was a prison. This is a must see tour!!!
It is open for tourism, there is a guided tour with a historical review from its construction, internal operation, punishments, privileges, escapes, etc. until closure as a detention center.
