It's best to get reservations for busy weekends, but it looks like reservations are not a must. Good to know!
I called reserve America that handles the California camping reservations & got same day res for Labor day. The ranger even called me to give me the gate code to get in after hours. Just to let you know no wood fires allowed only propane stoves & or bring a propane fire pit.
