Manager here: Is the worry trails, animals, or people? We had 400,000 visitors in 2017, and didn't lose anyone. Fire/Rescue Station 12 is a quarter of a mile from our gate, and they know the trails and use our UTV. In the last 5 years, I know of two "people problems", and while unpleasant at the time, no one was hurt, at least physically. Most injuries are sprained ankles. Animal problems are more likely to be dogs than snakes. Our biggest problem is convincing people to take minimal precautions. Take water and your cell phone. Pay attention to where you are - trail name and mile marker. Stay on the trails. There are way too many people comfortable hiking alone, even after dark. Allow plenty of time. Remember CLOSING TIME IS DARK, a half hour after sundown. The gates will be locked an hour (or so) after sundown, and your car is then in for the night. Most of the ones who get locked in say it was their first time at CRP and they got lost.
I run there alone all the time. I've never had a problem with anything. Let's face it, you probably less safe on the highways driving than in nature.
Always take necessary precautions no matter how safe a place has been. How many times have we seen first time incidents happen in places given the opportunity, and people say "Well it's never happened here ever before"... Well first time for everything. Just be alert, prepared but still enjoy yourself and you should be fine.
Yes ...with a tazer mace and a cell phone...and make sure your location is on... But yes hike away :-)
Yes. It is relatively safe In the morning hours. I don't know how it is in the afternoon. Many people hike alone. It is wise to be alert and have whistle or so as it is wooded
On weekends the trails are usually crowded, but it's best to take precautions, even then. During the week, I'd want to hike with a friend.
It depends on your skill level. Some of the trails are moderately advanced
Yeah it's safe, it's a poisonous snake habitat so as long as you stay on the marked trail you'll be completely fine
Yes, many do.
I would hike with another person or in a group
Yes, there are tons of people out there by themselves doing runs or just hiking. Plus cell coverage.
I've always felt safe here. My only concern with hiking alone is that I might fall, but I've never been concerned about "bad guys." You may see the occasional snake, but they tend to stay off the actual trails, so as long as you stay on the marked trails, you should be fine.
