I called the gym for the first time today at 8:00 p.m.; the gentleman who answered the phone was quite rude. No greeting, nothing, as though he was at home having a quarrel with someone. This is not encouraging. Further, he couldn't answer my qstns.

I'm with Steve. I've been a member since they opened and although I rarely interact with the evening staff the morning and midday staff are generally friendly.

I have been a member for 5 years and have always felt the staff to be very friendly. This definitely not the norm.
